About

unbaked is a registry of games whose code has been opened up: decompiled, recompiled, reimplemented, disassembled or released by its makers. It exists so people can find a game to port, mod, mash up with another, study, or train an agent on.

A shipped game is baked: compiled, packed and sealed. The projects listed here unbake it back into ingredients you can read, rebuild and mix.

Rules

  • We link source code and tools, never game files. Almost every project here needs your own legally obtained copy of the game.
  • Projects built from leaked source code are not listed.
  • Bundles that ship ROMs, disc images or copyrighted game data are not linked, wherever they are hosted.
  • Repositories taken down by their owners or by DMCA notices are not linked.
  • New repositories with little community signal are marked “new, unvetted”. Fake “PC port” repositories that bait downloads exist; read the code before running a release.

How the registry was built

The first pass was research: 27 parallel passes over console families, PC decompilations and reimplementations, official source releases, home computers, browser and mobile games, existing community lists and existing agent environments. Every GitHub repository was then checked against the GitHub API on 2026-10-12 for existence, stars, license and last activity. 115 listed repositories no longer exist and 259 were forks of projects already listed; both were removed.

Notes on each project are summaries written during research. The projects' own pages are the authority, and some notes will be out of date.

Sources and credits

Discovery leaned on these lists and communities. Visit them; several track details this registry does not.

recomp.fyi keeps a large table of recompilations. Its terms do not allow copying it, so none of its data is here. Browse it directly.

Data

The registry is readable by people and by agents. /api/games.json lists every game; each game has a full record at /api/games/<slug>.json with its projects, methods, licences and agent environments; /llms.txt describes both. Project facts come from each repository, which remains the authority.

Known gaps

Discord-only projects, forum threads and non-English communities are under-covered. Platform, year and genre were inferred for some entries. Corrections are welcome.
